CV preparation

There are five pearls of wisdom to remember when writing or updating your CV.

  1. Try to keep your CV no more than four pages long.
  2. A well laid out CV is easy to read and comprehend. Choose a structured format.
  3. Use bullet points. Short, concise points are clean and informative.
  4. Check your spelling, grammar and punctuation and dates of employment.
  5. Ensure your referee details are correct and that they are informed about being contacted.

Your CV is your most important document and you must make sure that besides the above five pearls of wisdom that you:

  • do not write long-drawn-out sentences and remarks about yourself,
    never lie about anything in your CV; you will be found out,
  • make sure all academic claims can be backed up,
  • ensure every position or job you have had appears on the CV,
  • ensure your personal details are correct,
  • make you CV interesting and easy to read,
  • always bring another copy of your CV to every interview you attend, even if you have emailed it. Make sure all copies are identical.

Interview tips

There are many schools of thought about how best to prepare for an interview. You can usually find useful tips on job search websites, including Career One and Seek. Seek also provides a handy Interview Wizard to help you prepare. You can find more links to other authorities on Interview Tips.

At Repforce Plus we like to ensure all our candidates are prepared to the best of their ability. The most consistent way to ensure this is to build an Interview Plan. Your interview plan will be unique to the position and organisation to which you are applying. Here are some points to consider in your plan;

Preparation

Organise your clothes for the interview in advance. Remember to dress appropriately to the culture of the company, the position and the image you wish to project should you get the job.

  • Assemble relevant information beforehand (eg documentation, qualifications.)
  • Ensure you have an agenda or list of questions at hand (see closing the interview).
  • Understand your remuneration package and the package on offer.
  • Research the company (using published materials like their website and contacts) so that you are able to ask “intelligent questions”.
  • Interviewers often seek practical examples of past behaviour, which help demonstrate your competencies. You should mentally prepare examples of achievements or past behaviours. Ensure you describe the situation, the action you took and the results or outcomes of your action. If you can, practice with someone you trust.

Arrival

Be on time. Ensure you arrive at reception at least 10–15 minutes prior to the set time.

Ensure the information you bring is neatly bound and as brief as possible. Smile. Make eye contact and give a firm handshake.

Interviewers frequently use ‘small talk’ to break the ice. Follow the interviewer’s lead on this, but don’t initiate a lot of small talk yourself. This could set the wrong tone.

Interview structure

No two styles of interviewing are the same. Go with the flow, but remember that interviewers value such qualities as:

  • warmth
  • brevity
  • honesty (never lie)
  • rapport
  • energy
  • enthusiasm
  • clear communication.

Normally, the interviewer gets information from you and then tells you about the position. However, this order of doing things varies from one interviewer to the next.

If you feel your body language is conveying anxiety, it is usually best to verbalise it. (For example, ‘I haven’t interviewed in years and I’m a little surprised to find myself nervous.’). Verbalising your nervousness often reduces it and interviewers are usually empathetic.

Ensure you have a note pad to make notes. Lean forward, make eye contact and write down the things that are important in short bullet points. This signifies you are taking the position seriously.

Closing the interview

Prepare pertinent questions to ask towards the end of the interview. Some examples include:

  • Is it a new or existing position?
  • What are the responsibilities and priorities?
  • What are the reporting relationships?
  • What resources are accessible to the position?
  • What is the criteria for measuring success?
  • What is the next step?
  • What long term career opportunities are available?

Don’t initiate any discussion about remuneration at the first interview. However be open and honest if the interviewer asks.

Ask (if you haven’t been told) what the process will be after the interview has been completed.

Have a couple of positive comments to make that recap some of the highlights of the conversation. Ensure you reinforce any action points to arise during the interview, like providing a copy of a qualification or additional information. Reiterate your strengths. If you are genuinely interested, say so. Leave the interviewer with a good impression: smile. Firm handshake. Don’t blow it by relaxing too soon.

Follow up

Immediately after the interview, contact your consultant to debrief regardless of how you think the interview went.

Common traps

  • Being over-friendly.
  • Not listening to questions carefully or attentively.
  • Saying ‘we’ instead of referring to your own achievements.
  • Making very general statements that lack substance.
  • Being over-enthusiastic.
  • Being poorly prepared, not having a plan.
  • Slouching, mumbling, speaking slowly.
  • Not making eye contact
  • Knowing nothing about the company to which you are applying.
  • Making derogatory remarks about your present or former employers, customers or workmates.

Remember, not all positions you are applying for will be right for you. The purpose of the interview is to help you (as well as the company) sort out if the ‘fit’ is right, so don’t be afraid to interview the potential employer.

What ‘sensitive information’ Is

Sensitive information is a special category of personal information. It is information or opinion about your:

  • your performance appraisals;
  • our assessment of your ongoing performance and prospects;
  • any test or assessment (including medical tests and assessments) that you might be required to undergo;
  • our identification of your training needs;
  • any workplace rehabilitation;
  • our management of any complaint, investigation or inquiry in which you are involved;

You can gain access to your information

Sales assessment

All our candidates interviewed in the sales area undertake a written assessment of their overall sales ability which tells us:

  • How well they understand the sales process, especially the concepts of features and benefits.
  • If they can cold call effectively
  • If they can build solid relationships
  • If they can close deals
  • What motivates them, ie. money
  • Can they be part of a team
  • How they compare to the average salesperson.

We use these sales assessments as well as a specific Profile assessment for candidates. We believe that sales is a learnt skill. However we still use a personal profile assessment to acertain how each candidate would fit into your culture, sales or administration team. Therefore for anyone wishing to enter a career in sales or administration and wanting to improve their performance they can be taught the skills and techniques enabling them to succeed. History

Repforce International was formed in 1996 from an idea and the experiences of Norman and Michele Graeve.

From an experience in domestic employment agencies they decided to form Repforce International — an employment agency that would serve small, medium and large enterprises in the sales and marketing sector.

They opened their doors to business in July 1997 in Bryson Street, Chatswood and the first consultants joined the Repforce Team in 1998.

From this small beginning Norman and Michele have built the business through a strict policy of fair pricing, real ethics and personal involvement with clients and candidates.

In recent years Repforce International has moved to its own premises in Chatswood, appointed more than 10 consultants, and expanded its portfolio to include office administration and temp placements.

In 2008 Repforce International changed its name to Repforce Plus to signal the next step. Repforce Plus is now a total recruitment company, still with same values and ethics, and with specialist consultants.

The Repforce Plus mission is:

Norman Graeve Ph.C MRCSA, Director

Norman GraeveEducated at Wesley College in Victoria, graduating as a Pharmaceutical Chemist, Norman owned his own retail pharmacy for 7 years. Following the sale of the pharmacy he started his own company supplying pharmacy and general retail, importing and manufacturing. Norman has been involved in both private and public companies, principally in the retail sector, where he has advised on sales training, product promotion and administration. He has established sales teams, devised training and promotional programs, and is currently acting as a senior consultant to several government and semi-government bodies.

Norman is a member of the NSW Council of the RCSA

Michele Graeve, Director & Administration Manager

Michele GraeveMichele has over 25 years business experience and was a Director of a national importer and wholesaler selling to the retail pharmacy and department store sector. She then started her own employment agency specialising in the domestic/childcare area. Michele is in charge of the administration & accounting systems for Repforce.

Cameron MacDonald, Consultant

Cameron MacDonaldCameron has a diverse and varied background. He has extensive experience in the Airline industry and 8 years experience running a successful Landscaping and Handyman business. He has a passion for restoration of classic vehicles and motorcycles passed on from his Engineer father. Cameron has substantial “hands on” skills developed through many house renovation projects, vehicle restoration projects and his time in recruitment consulting to a range of industries consisting of building, home improvement, electrical, plumbing, engineering, industrial, freight and logistics.

Chris Bragg BA, Consultant

Chris BraggChris worked in advertising for one of the largest global firms for 4.5 years then returned to complete his Bachelor of Arts at Sydney University and started working in the wine trade part time. This saw him progress to managing fine wine retail outlets in Australia and the UK (the leading independent in Australia and also London). He has also worked in the wholesale side of the wine business selling. Chris is a people person who enjoys sports and represented NSW and Australia in rowing. He is easy to talk to, has a keen eye for talent and is very professional in his approach to candidates and clients alike.

Peter Kemp MRCSA, Consultant

Peter KempPeter specialises in all areas of the healthcare recruitment space — including pharmaceutical, medical, hospital, dental, veterinary and scientific. Peter has 30+ years experience in the healthcare industry. He is an innovative sales and marketing professional. Experienced in all key channels within the pharmaceutical industry, Peter combines solid strategic and analytical abilities with strong leadership and mentoring skills. He has a Certificate in Marketing and Management from MGSM, and is presently studying Training and Assessment at TAFE. Sarah Cunningham, Consultant

Sarah CunninghamSarah specialises in sourcing successful sales staff in several market sectors. Sarah has a rich career history starting from selecting and training elite gymnasts (Sydney 2000 team), sales & middle management roles in Lotus/IBM and Microsoft Australia, and setting up a residential real estate business on Sydney’s Northern beaches. Sarah combines solid strategic and analytical abilities with strong leadership and mentoring skills. In addition, Sarah insists any candidates undergo sales competency testing and professional attributes analysis, combined with behavioural based interviewing. In her current role, she is a highly motivated sales recruitment consultant with a desire to achieve successful outcomes for both clients and candidates using her experience to provide that important extra value-added service.

Louise Lamrock, Consultant

Louise LamrockLouise Lamrock brings a clear understanding of Human Personality together with the pragmatic experience from two diverse fields to her role as a Recruitment Consultant. She is the founder of a successful Natural therapy clinic in Sydney’s upper north shore and is a dedicated mother of four. Louise’s history is rich with experience. From running a large building company to working with families and individuals to build better lives. Louise has completed extensive studies in the Sciences, Building, Psychology, Psychotherapy and has trained as a Transactional Analyst. She is currently undertaking a Master of Clinical Psychotherapy to add further developmental approaches to her life skills mastery.

Natasha Clyne, Consultant

Natasha has a strong hospitality and administration background. She holds a Swiss Diploma in Hotel Management through the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School. She has worked in various roles in Hospitality including as a Concierge of a Five Star Sydney property. It was from this basis that she expanded her administration skills as a PA and Executive Secretary of a non-profit organisation that successfully ran a national political campaign, playing a vital strategic and administrative role. She successfully owned and managed a Coffee shop in the Sydney CBD for five years.
